| In this article I will be discussing the topic which is better The old ECW or the new ECW. this article will be based on my opinion. ECW as we know it today is bought to us be Vince McMahon. Once Vince bought ECW it changed completely. Now I’m ok with Vince buying the ECW video library. But I’m not ok with Vince using the name Extreme Championship Wrestling. ECW isn’t Extreme anymore. When Paul Heyman owned it and ran it, ECW was great. Paul Heyman was one of the best bookers in wrestling. He helped revolutionize the world of Extreme and Hardcore wrestling. To me the old ECW was better. I mean come on when was the last ECW Extreme Rules Match you saw. WWE’s ECW is all about making money. The old ECW was about entertaining the fans. Yeah some of the wrestlers did it for money, but look at New Jack and Mustafa. They were constantly in and out of jail, but they always came back to ECW. The Eliminators and Pit Bulls they gave it 150% every match. . Sabu and Too Cold Scorpio had some great matches. They once went for 30-mins with no winner it ended up being a draw because they ran out of time. Sabu and Terry Funk had some memorable matches. Sabu ripping open his bicep and continuing the match that shows Sabu’s love for ECW. ECW gave so many wrestler chances. And some of them became names known around the World.
ECW gave us some big names too. Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Tazz, Eddie, Stone Cold and Cactus Jack all went through ECW. Sandman, Dreamer, Raven ECW gave them all opportunities. ECW was a land of opportunity. On time they needed someone to be champ so bad. They took a ring hand and had him win the ECW World title and he went on to be one of the biggest names in ECW. His name was Mickey Whipwreck.
Unlike most Wrestling ECW wasn’t scripted and was 100% real. Yes the wrestler’s had a ton of training and yes the chairs were aluminum but, when they had bring you own weapons nights those were real. I remember 1 match in particular they had Sandman v.s. Sabu I believe. Sabu took a frying pan which he thought was a normal frying pan. But it was made of Iron and it broke Sandman’s nose. This put an end to that because Heyman had to pay for Sandman’s expenses out of his own pocket. ECW has the most insane crap in the US. They had a completely unique style. Then when Rey and Psychosis (not sure on the spelling) came over with their feud things took off. They now had extreme lucha libre wrestling, which was extremely awe-inspiring to watch. I always enjoyed watching the old ECW. It had the best wrestlers to me. Without it we wouldn’t have Cactus Jack or Stone Cold. Now yes ECW did have some problems the whole, Brian Pillman didn’t go so well to me. But tragically ECW ended up failing in the end. I blame the fall of ECW not on anyone in ECW but on the TV company showing ECW. The whole reason it was kicked off the air was because of a storyline. The storyline went like this.
Tommy Dreamer got Raven’s girlfriend pregnant. Raven got pissed and beat up Dreamer. Now Raven then got a new girlfriend who is important later on. Dreamer then hired Shane Douglass to protect his wife (Raven’s EX) and kid. In return Dreamer wouldn’t go after the ECW World Title. Then at one point Douglass reveled Raven’s EX wasn’t pregnant at all, but was having an affair with someone. Dreamer suspected Douglass who pleads his innocence and revels that Raven’s EX and his current girlfriend were having an affair with each other. Then they make out and in the end Dreamer kisses them both and says. “I’m going to take them both home cause I’m that F****** extreme.” And the TV company toke if off the air. That combined with WCW and WWF stealing their talent to me sparked the beginning of the end for ECW.
Now that I have given m reason for liking the Old ECW I’ll give some reasons for not liking the current ECW. First off the name Extreme Championship Wrestling doesn’t belong here. Since Heyman lost control of it, ECW has been anything but extreme. Second it has become a training ground or a death bed depending. Putting stars like Kane and Viscera has to signal something. As for it being a training ground ECW has basically become a televised HEAT. 3rd and most importantly the ECW Championship. The ECW title hasn’t even reached the magnitude of when it was in the Old ECW. Back them it meant something to people now it isn’t even that important.
